How to Follow a Plant Based Diet in High School

Following a plant based diet can be difficult, especially in high school. Not everyone is always very supportive, and your school might not offer a lot of options for your school lunch. Being a vegetarian is important to me, so I’m going to share some of my tips on how I manage to do it!

Unsupportive peers

This is definitely one of the most challenging parts of following a plant based diet. People making fun of you, of making snide comments about it. Because I’ve had over 2 years of experience with these peers, I have a couple of tips for you.

Have good friends 

Have friends that will support you. Most of my friends don’t have any issue with me or with Lily being vegetarian, and will make sure to accommodate us when needed.

The opinions of those who aren’t your good friends isn’t something that should really matter. I know it can be tempting to get hung over what they tell you, but these are people that aren’t a big part of your life. They don’t know you. They don’t know what your reasons for switching to a plant based diet might be, and ultimately their view doesn’t need to have any consequences to you.

Ignore them

If they persist in belittling them, ignore them. They don’t have anything better to do other than to tell you that your personal choices are wrong. 

There’s always going to be someone that finds an issue with what you do. The only opinion that really matters is your own. If you want to follow a plant based diet and that makes you happy, do it. 

It’s no one’s place to tell you your personal choices are wrong, and it isn’t your place to tell others that theirs are wrong. Your personal choices are yours, and you shouldn’t let anyone make you feel insecure about a personal choice.

School lunch

Not every school has many vegetarians. I’ve been fairly lucky because my high school does offer vegetarian options, however I know not ever high school does. If your high school doesn’t offer any plant based options, here are a couple of tips you can use.

Bring your own lunch

You can bring your own lunch to make sure you can eat something for lunch.

If this is something you choose to do, you should definitely include food that is high in all of the nutrients that you need. You want to make sure that you stay healthy.

Bringing a healthy lunch will also help you focus in classes. Ultimately, if this is something you can do, you should definitely bring your own lunch because it will be much healthier than your school lunch.

Write to the school board

If you don’t want/can’t bring your own lunch, you should write to the school board and let them know that it’s ridiculous they don’t offer plant based lunches, if they don’t. People follow plant based diets for various reasons, among which include religious and health reasons. 

Your school should provide some kind of accommodation to those that choose not to eat meat, and if they don’t, you can reach higher levels and create change.

Be careful

I’ve noticed there’s foods that not everyone knows isn’t vegetarian or vegan, or doesn’t follow whatever plant based diet you choose to follow. I recommend having a little bit of caution.

Overall, if the school specifically labels something as vegetarian or vegan, you can likely assume that it is, but it never hurts to check to make sure. Depending on your school and the administration, you might be able to request a list of ingredients and nutrition facts that you can use to decide what you eat.

Research

If you decide to switch to a plant based diet in high school, you definitely need to do your research. Depending on your physical activity level, as well as your height and weight and a few other variables, how much you need of each nutrient will differ.

For this reason, you need to do your research to know how much of what you’ll need and what the best course of action to switch will be for you.
