A Beginner’s Guide to Transitioning to a Plant Based Diet

We’ve heard so many times “I would go vegetarian, but I just don’t know how!” Well, if you really want to transition to any sort of plant based diet, here’s the guide for you! Make your mind up

The first step is to make your mind up. Decide this is something you want to do. If you need any help with convincing yourself to go plant based, watch a video on how meat gets to your plate. Maybe you have to plant based for health reasons and then your already one step ahead

Another part of making your mind up is you have to decide how far you want to go. There isn’t just one plant based diet, and what’s right for your favorite internet guru might not be right for you. Come up with a plan

Especially if you already don’t eat much meat, giving meat the cold shoulder might be something you can easily do. For others, it might be more manageable to transition a little slower. 

Perhaps you might want to start with Meatless Mondays and then work on increasing the amount of days each week you don’t eat meat. Or, you could start by cutting out only red meats, then add in white meats and fish. Whatever it is, make a plan for how you’re going to go plant based. It just needs to be feasible for you. Going plant based shouldn’t be stressful or seem impossible. Feel free to take it slow if you have too; if you’re serious and committed you’ll realize how quickly you seem to forget what meat tastes like.

Research

Going plant based is something that does take a bit of research. You have to look into which nutrients you need to figure out how to replace.

Some tips we have in this area is to just start searching. The main nutrients you’ll need to make sure you get are protein and iron, and there’s a lot of different foods out there which will accommodate you. A simple google search of foods with iron or foods with protein will get you plenty of options quickly.

Don’t make this mistake of not doing your research. It’s easy to go plant based and switch to eating only processed foods and snacks with no nutrients. While you can get by with this, it’s not good for your health and very easy to become deficient in many nutrients. Taking care of your health should be a priority, so do your research to make sure you’re getting in all the nutrients. 

Talk to people

You should definitely talk to your friends; they might have plenty of tips for you, or they might also be willing to join you. Having a buddy that will help motivate you to stay plant based will help you achieve your goal.

Having a friend to go plant based with you can make it all the more fun. You can continue to motivate each other, and share recipes to improve each of your diets. It’s also good to have a friend who is already on a plant based diet to motivate you and guide you. If you’re concerned about it being difficult or don’t know what you should be eating, having someone with experience can make it much easier. 

For example my (Lily’s) sister actually just went vegetarian a few weeks ago, she was on the fence about it for a long time, but I helped convince her. She asks me what foods she can and can’t eat, and we cook healthy vegetarian meals together. 

You don’t need someone in your life that has experience or can motivate you, a strong will can help you push through and the internet can tell you almost anything. However, if you do have someone to support you it’s good to reach out to them.

  1. It’s definitely good to get support! A friend on instagram had a photo of some vegan pizzas in California that looked delicious. One was covered in arugula with some olives and cucumbers. I’m sure there was some olive oil involved. Encouraging!
